It can also be profitable if you have the patience. Sometimes it can get on your nerves when you come across people who won’t fold their crappy hands and call you all the way to the river and beat out your hand! This has happened to me on a couple of occasions. The most recent account of this was when I had a pair of queens and raised $20 pre-flop. My intention was to force the other nine players to fold and I’ll just collect the ante ( three dollars ). So everyone folds except this guy who had a three-five unsuited. The flop comes out Jack(clubs)-six(diamonds)-four(hearts). I’m still on top with my queens because my queens can beat Jacks (unless he had pocket pairs and made a set, which I doubted). I raise another $20 and was feeling confident that this guy is not going to call. This guy is on a straight draw now. The turn card flips open to reveal an eight of spades. I know there is a straight draw from the flop but who calls $20 on a 1-2 no-limit pre-flop hand with an unsuited 3-5 pocket hand? So I raise ALL-IN with my queens after the turn card, which was about $150. The guy hesitates for a moment and makes the call. The tw0 of diamonds flips open and he gets a straight. That’s a bad beat. I was irritated by the way he played, but Lady Luck was with him that evening. The moral of the story is: Don’t play poker with idiots. If you have no choice, just bet smaller. The idiots will still call you. Just have some fun.
